Set Your Mind to Succeed

Set Your Mind toSet your mind to succeed in running and in life!

I decided to share some of the techniques I use to train my mind for success.  Marathon training is not all physical.  A large part of the success equation is to make sure you set your mind to succeed.  I explain what I mean by this in this video.

Set your mind to succeed

Set your mind to succeed in anything you do by learning this technique I use

So, I was doing some threshold intervals just before I wrote this post and thought I’d share this little mind trick with you. I use it when I’m running but also when I do other things and it really works!

If you don’t know what threshold runs are, they are a run training designed to teach your body to manage lactic acid buildup better. Basically you run at a pace that is just below the point where your muscles would produce lactic acid.   Normally, that is running faster than we are used to but not flat out sprinting.  The theory is that the longer you can run at this level, the more your body gets used to it and adapts.  Over time, your body will only start producing lactic acid at higher levels of exertion.  In practice however, it is no simple feat to actually run the distances, and it becomes a question of mind over matter, so you have to set your mind to get through it.

Here is the trick to set your mind to get it done…In this particular workout I had to run 3 separate intervals of 1 mile (each one at my threshold pace) and rest for 90 seconds in between.  Running fast for a mile is not easy and you can very quickly let negative thoughts creep in your mind and self-sabotage your training.   In order to get through each interval, I trick myself by just breaking it down into less intimidating distances that I know I can do.  When I reach that milestone, I tell myself the next one and just keep doing that until I have run the complete mile!

So how can you set your mind to accomplish other things besides running, you ask?  Well, when you have a large goal ahead of you, break it down into smaller objectives.  Set your mind to succeed in smaller increments and as you reach your objectives you will feel a sense of accomplishment and you will stay motivated to work toward the next one.   All of a sudden, things that seem intimidating become achievable!

Living with Purpose. Live Fulfilled.

p.s. So go ahead and try it today for whatever goals you set your mind to accomplish in your life, and let me know how it works out for you by leaving a comment on this post.

You are so right about that! I don’t really explain how to do it much in the video but I will probably do a separate post dedicated to visualization techniques soon! Thanks for visiting!

Hey thanks! That means a lot to me!

    • I am back and forth on the power of our minds. I certainly have come to realize that you’ll never succeed unless you believe you can. It’s really amazing what frame of mind can do. And then you point on the actual physical difference as well.

This is a great strategy that works for most challenges in life. Don’t stare yourself blind against the magnitude of what is in front of you, but break it down into little pieces or little tasks and suddenly it’s not that daunting. Somehow I never thought to apply it to physical training though 😉

    Thanks for that.

    Great article. 🙂

Something mindset-related I learned is actually from P90X. Flirt with the line. There’s a threshold that will cause immense discomfort when we reach it. The more we keep hitting that line and staying there, the more our possibilities expand, the more powerful we can be.

Hey, after running a biz the last 3 years, line-flirting is all we did, and I got the dollars now to prove it. 🙂

“Set your mind to succeed in smaller increments and as you reach your objectives you will feel a sense of accomplishment and you will stay motivated to work toward the next one. All of a sudden, things that seem intimidating become achievable!” This is so true. Most often, we see a task or a goal so overwhelming and impossible. But this big goal could not be achieved without smaller tasks and the challenge is to correctly identify what tasks would lead us to our goal. I think what drives people away from this approach is that they wanted to achieve a goal quickly. Often times, this is just not how it is…
