It seems I’ve been a little neglectful in my Purpose Driven Life Spotlight posts because I haven’t even written about the charity I am currently supporting! I guess I was just caught up in the research of all the wonderful charities and non-profits there are out there!
So without further ado, let me introduce you to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in this installment of the Purpose Driven Life Spotlight.
A true example of a purpose driven life
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was born out of a family’s grief following the death of their teenage son. Robert Roesler de Villiers, was only 16 when he quickly succumbed to leukemia in 1944. At that time, the disease was 100% fatal and his parents were frustrated by the lack of effective treatments. They were convinced there was a cure for blood cancers so Rudolph and Antoinette de Villiers started a fundraising and education organization in their son’s name.
Since that time the LLS has awarded more than $600 million in research funding and has significantly contributed to the unprecedented rise in survival rates for some blood cancers. However today in the U.S., every 4 minutes, someone is diagnosed with blood cancer and every 10 minutes, somebody dies…The necessary work is far from being complete.
The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.
Purpose Driven Life Spotlight – Team in Training
Team in Training is a major contributing program to the funds raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It has grown in popularity over the last decade as more and more people are getting involved and getting in shape at the same time! This video is a great overview of the Team in Training program.
Part of my own purpose driven life journey is related to my support of the LLS. Over the last 3 years, I have run 5 marathons with Team in Training and have raised close to $20 thousand. I am currently in training for my sixth TNT marathon in Rome, Italy in March 2011.
Living with Purpose. Live Fulfilled.
