Giving in the News – George Clooney and the Gates Foundation

Giving in the News

In this regular post category I share stories I come across about giving in the news – the stories are focused on philanthropists and/or social entrepreneurship.

This week I am featuring George Clooney and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Enjoy!

Giving in the News – George Clooney inspires with his Bob Hope humanitarian award acceptance speach.

Super-star and heartthrob George Clooney demonstrates there is more to this man than just a pretty face. Upon accepting the award Clooney makes the point that celebrities are uniquely positioned to help, and many of them are, but he also points out a major failing that has to be corrected, and that is the short-lived attention that is given to people in need. Check out what he has to say in the video…

Clooney illustrates how quickly and effectively support and attention is mobilized when disaster strikes, but after a while, the media attention is shifted on to another “story”. Clooney explains that even though the attention has moved on, the need for help is still there, and aid efforts must continue. A very good point indeed and food for thought for anyone who is considering supporting a cause – there is much more need for help than what is making the headlines!

Giving in the News – Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donate $5.6 M to Water for People.

This week the Gates Foundation provided much needed funding to Water for People. Water for People is a non-profit organization dedicated to building a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation, and where no one suffers or dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease.

That’s it for this time! I hope you enjoy (and benefit from) these great stories of Giving in the News!
