Dealing with Disappointment in a Purpose Driven Life

dealing with disappointmentAfter dealing with disappointment during my marathon this past weekend, I decided to regroup and push even harder on my next attempt….Here’s how I bounced back so quickly – and how you can too when things don’t go your way!

“Dealing with Disappointment can make you more focused to succeed!”

Here are a few more ways to help in dealing with disappointment:

  • When life throws a curve ball at you, it’s normal to feel like you’re the victim.  Just don’t dwell on it!  In his article on dealing with disappointment, Chuck Gallozzi calls this phenomenon “looking inward”.  When this happens think about all the things you are fortunate for that you take for granted and about all those who are less fortunate than you…Count your blessings, dust yourself off, and take another crack at it.
  • When you are following your passions and living with purpose, remember to let your heart guide you along the path to fulfillment.  If you live your life like this and are dealt a crummy hand once in a while, you will be open to the hiccups and course corrections and things won’t seem as bad anymore.
  • This last way of dealing with disappointment is actually a bit harder than it seems but it does work!  If you set yourself up ahead of time to not be disappointed, then it becomes kind of impossible to become disappointed!  I have used this technique successfully a few times in the past when I was faced with an unfamiliar situation and wanted to manage my expectations.  When you expect nothing more than what life offers, and embrace what comes your way, you will never be let down!

If you are effectively dealing with disappointment, you have the ability to take things in stride and enjoy your life journey much more!

Living with Purpose. Live Fulfilled.

I hope you enjoyed these tips to help in dealing with disappointment.  Just remember that nobody can have a charmed life that doesn’t have any bumps in the road!  If you have your own ways of dealing with disappointment, I’d love to hear it, just leave a comment below.

Patch, loved your video. Disappointment, WOW this is a biggie that stops people from going forward. Did you finish your marathon? It seems like you did, but just not in your record time. What did you learn from this, how is this going to help you in the future? More importantly, it is smart to look at how you react to your disappointment and see that is not the real you.
    Thanks again for your thoughts

      Hey Emma!
Thanks for visiting! Been a while since Leadership Branding…hope all is well with you!
Yeah, I finished the race. That wasn’t my concern…never is really…Anyway, the disappointment had to do with my investment in my training and that I couldn’t perform as well as I had expected and planned. You see in life there are things you can control and then there are things you can’t. When you do something often enough you actually can tune in to your body at a much deeper level and read the signals it sends you. It is quite amazing really! I was working really hard to maintain my target pace for the first half of the race but the signals my body were sending me were not good at all. I saw my coach at the mid point and she noticed I was not having an A-day either and said I was probably coming down with something…I didn’t have any of the classic cold or flu symptoms but we both knew something was off. My legs were very heavy and my heart rate was off the charts when it shouldn’t have been. I came to terms with my “failure” to qualify for Boston this year and that it was due to something beyond my control. My training was not the problem, my fitness was not the problem, my mindset was not the problem. I decided to just enjoy the rest of the race and look for my family cheering for me. There would be other races…To top it off, I was more determined than ever to push myself harder in training for my next attempt. Morale of the story – it just isn’t worth it to dwell on disappointment, use the lessons to fuel your desire and make you strive even harder the next time! Cheers, Patch.

If you don’t have disappointment then you will also lose purpose. A purpose driven life needs disappointment to continue.

Just recently I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Now I understand why I was so emotionally unstable for all these years. It’s hard for me then to accept disappointment. I’m on my thirties, recently broke up with a partner for 8 years and prayers has been pulling me up. I went back to school and starting to put up my own biz. Patch, continue to post more. You are such an inspiration.
